The amazing deep-sea fish with a transparent head

This amazing barrel eye fish really does have eyes in the back of his head.Accustomed to living in the pitch black of the deep sea, the animal has developed a unique and incredibly useful ability to spot predators trying to sneak up on it, as well as potential food - through its own head.

Viewed from the front, the creature appears to be just like an average fish. But the differences immediately become clear when looking at it from the side or from above. While its body is mostly dark, the top part of its head is transparent, and its eyes are clearly visible.

Scientists believed the barrel eye fish could only look upwards, but they have recently discovered the creature can also look forward to align its mouth with its eyes.During its evolution, the Macropinna microstoma has developed so its head is transparent and its eyes are able to move themselves inside its own head to look out in different directions

According to evolutionary biologists, it developed such a powerful sense of sight as a result of the harsh environment it lives in.The fish, which is only a few inches long, lives a great depths just below the line to which sunlight can penetrate the water. This means that creatures around it cannot see it clearly. Predators lurking above it cannot spot it either, but it can look upwards to hunt for the small fish and plankton it lives on.

Teenage sacked for moaning on Facebook about her 'totally boring' job!

Like many teenagers, Kimberley Swann was underwhelmed by the menial tasks she was given in her new job.But while other 16-year-olds might have confided in friends and family about the filing, stapling and hole-punching, she decided to let off steam by posting comments on the social networking website Facebook.

Three weeks later, the words 'first day at work. omg !! So dull!!' came back to haunt her when her boss discovered them as he surfed the net.Another posting two days later complained, ' all i do is shred holepunch n scan paper!!! omg!', while another fortnight of apparent misery produced the moan, 'im so totally bord!!!'

Swann was called into Stephen Ivell's office and fired on the spot before being marched from the premises in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. Swann, from Clacton, had worked as a waitress and in a call centre before being taken on by Ivell Marketing & Logistics, a product development and sourcing company, on February 2.

On Monday this week, she was called in to see Mr Ivell who handed her a letter explaining her employment had been terminated. It said: 'Following your comments made on Facebook about your job and the company we feel it is better that, as you are not happy and do not enjoy your work, we end your employment with Ivell Marketing & Logistics with immediate effect.'Mr Ivell said his firm had done everything by the book.

Apple releases Nitro-supercharged Safari 4 public beta

Safari 4 has been available as a beta browser for some time, though Safari 3 was the browser download of choice. With today's official public beta announcement, the main Safari download page takes you to the Safari 4 download link. Users wanting Safari 3 must click an additional link to reach that download page, now considered a historical release.

Apple said that its new Nitro JavaScript engine (based on WebKit) runs JavaScripts up to 4.2 times faster than its Safari 3 predecessor, 30 times faster than IE7 and three times faster than Firefox 3, at least according to Apple. Safari 4 was the first browser to pass the Acid3 web compatibility test with a perfect score a few months back while still in beta. And now it is the first final version of a browser to support this functionality. But while there are lots of new features, Apple missed putting more focus on security, which has been heavily criticized in the past.

Apple has added several new features to Safari. The hefty 25.5 MB package (excluding Quicktime) now includes a new preview of frequently visited pages called Top Sites, a full history search (Opera has had this for some time), Cover Flow -- to flip through the web history and bookmarks, as well as improved tabbed browsing.

Safari 4 also includes HTML 5 support for offline technologies that enable web-based applications to store information locally without an active always-on Internet connection. According to Apple, it is the first browser to support advanced CSS Effects which provide "highly polished web graphics using reflections, gradients and precision masks."

is this ATLANTIS???

The above is an extraordinary image which could be of the city of ATLANTIS.

It shows a perfect rectangle the size of Wales lying on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 3½ miles down. A host of criss-crossing lines, looking like a map of a vast metropolis, are enclosed by the boundary. They seem too vast and organised to be caused naturally.

And last night the possibility of an extraordinary discovery had oceanographers and geophysicists captivated. The site lies 620 miles off the west coast of Africa near the Canary Islands — a location for Atlantis seemingly suggested by the ancient philosopher Plato. He believed it was an island civilization sunk by an earthquake and floods around 9,700BC — nearly 12,000 years ago.

The “grid” showed up on Google Ocean, a Google Earth extension that uses a combination of satellite images and marine surveys. Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University — and one of the world’s leading authorities on Atlantis — called it “fascinating”.He said: “The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato. Even if it turns out to be geographical, this definitely deserves a closer look.”

The legend of Atlantis has captured the imagination of scholars for centuries. Situated in an area called the Madeira Abyssal Plane, the grid was spotted by aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford as he browsed through Google Ocean.Bernie, 38, of Chester, said: “It looks like an aerial map of Milton Keynes. It must be man-made.”

Google claimedthat the criss-crossing lines were sonar data collected as boats mapped the ocean floor. But the internet giant said “blank spots” within the lines could not be explained.A spokeswoman said: “Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor.“The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.“The fact that there are blank spots between each of these lines is a sign of how little we really know about the world’s oceans.”

Exploding chair kills boy anally..!! WTF...

Well, stories don't get much worse than this. A 14-year-old boy in China was killed when his chair exploded, sending chunks of metal into his rectum. The bleeding this caused killed him.

The alleged explosion came from the gas cylinder that was in the base of the chair, the part that allowed the user to adjust the seat up and down. The canister gets compressed when you sit on it, but can it actually create enough energy to make the seat cushion explode like that and kill a man? I doubt it, but this is what people are reporting.

Buddhist temple built out of one million beer bottles

A temple has been built by monks in northeast Thailand who used over a million recycled beer bottles to make the walls and roof. Buddhist monks have recycled over one million used bottles to build their temple in Khun Han, Thailand near the Cambodian border

Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, also known as Wat Lan Kuad or 'the Temple of a Million Bottles', is in Sisaket province near the Cambodian border, 400 miles from the capital Bangkok. The Buddhist monks began collecting bottles in 1984 and they collected so many that they decided to use them as a building material.

They encouraged the local authorities to send them more and they have now created a complex of around 20 buildings using the beer bottles, comprising the main temple over a lake, crematorium, prayer rooms, a hall, water tower, tourist bathrooms and several small bungalows raised off the ground which serve as monks quarters. The bottles do not lose their colour, provide good lighting and are easy to clean, the men say.

A concrete core is used to strengthen the building and the green bottles are Heineken and the brown ones are the Thai beer Chang. The monks are so eco-friendly that the mosaics of Buddha are created with recycled beer bottle caps.Altogether there are about 1.5 million recycled bottles in the temple, and the monks at the temple are intending to reuse even more. The beer bottle temple is now on an approved list of Eco-friendly sight-seeing tours in southeast Asia.

world's longest ear hair

His ear hair is 25cm long and still growing, but the grocer from India Radhakant Baijpai has no intention of trimming it, no matter what his wife says.

Officially recognised by Guinness in 2003 as having the longest ear hair in the world, Mr Radhakant has carefully coiffed his ear-follicles from what was a record-breaking 13.2cm to their current ear-itching length.Considered by Mr Radhakant, 58, to be symbol of luck and prosperity, his ear-hair has been growing since he was 18 and has never been cut.

Maintained by a specially prepared blend of herbal shampoo, Mr Radhakant has so far resisted the pleas of his long suffering wife to cut it off.Mr Radhakant has even stopped wearing rings, so as not to catch his hair and run the risk of losing out on his record.

''I am sure that no one in the world has ear-hair longer than mine and my hair is almost double the length of the first record I set in 2003.......We are currently waiting for confirmation from Guinness that my ear hair, which stands at 25cm is now the new standard for men with extreme ear hair.''

charges against pirate bay dropped. :)

Half of the charges leveled at the founders of PIRATE BAY file sharing site has been dropped. Swedish prosecutors dropped charges relating to "assisting copyright infringement" leaving the lesser charges of "assisting making available copyright material" on trial day two.Pirate Bay co-founder Frederik Neik said it showed prosecutors had misunderstood the technology.

The music industry played down the changes as "simplifying the charges".Peter Danowsky, legal counsel for the music companies in the case, said: "It's a largely technical issue that changes nothing in terms of our compensation claims and has no bearing whatsoever on the main case against The Pirate Bay."In fact it simplifies the prosecutor's case by allowing him to focus on the main issue, which is the making available of copyrighted works."

The Pirate Bay was launched in 2003 and quickly established itself as the world's most high profile, file-sharing websites. In February 2009, it reported 22 million simultaneous users. At the start of the trial in Stockholm, Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmsioppi and Carl Lundstorm were facing a large fine and up to two years in prison, if convicted.

BitTorrent is a legal application used by many file-shares to swap content because of the fast and efficient manner it distributes files. No copyright content is hosted on The Pirate Bay's web servers; instead the site hosts "torrent" links to TV, film and music files held on its users computers.

“The best way to defeat potential botnets like Conficker/Downadup is by the security and Domain Name System communities working together,” said Greg Rattray, chief Internet security advisor at ICANN. “ICANN represents a community that’s all about coordinating those kinds of efforts to keep the Internet globally secure and stable.”Along with Microsoft, organizations involved in this collaborative effort include ICANN, NeuStar, VeriSign, CNNIC, Afilias, Public Internet Registry, Global Domains International Inc., M1D Global, AOL, Symantec, F-Secure, ISC, researchers from Georgia Tech, the Shadowserver Foundation, Arbor Networks and Support Intelligence

Pakistan finally admits !!!!!

Pakistan was holding in custody the ringleader and five other suspects in the conspiracy behind a militant attack that killed 179 people in Mumbai, the top Pakistani interior ministry official said earlier this evening. "Some part of the conspiracy has taken place in Pakistan," Rehman Malik, adviser to the prime minister on the interior, told a news conference, detailing how the gunmen had sailed from Karachi to carry out the attack on the Indian financial capital between November 26-28.

India has maintained the plot was hatched in Pakistan, and has pressed for forceful follow-up by Pakistani authorities against militants belonging to Laskhar-e-Taiba, a jihadi group it says was responsible. Tensions have been running high between India and Pakistan since the attack by 10 gunmen on India's financial capital last November, though fear of a conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors has receded in recent weeks.

Tracing telephone calls and bank transfers had led to the capture of a key figure in the conspiracy, Hammad Amin Sadiq, Malik said. "He was basically the main operator," Malik said, adding that his interrogation led to the raid on two hideouts, one in the port city, and one two hours outside."We have located those locations which were used by the terrorists before launching themselves," Malik said."They had some kind of training, they went into ocean," Malik said, saying they had sailed from Karachi."Some of the accused who have been arrested, they have given us the full rundown."

Malik said the breakthrough in the investigation had resulted from tracing the fishing vessel used by the militants, purchases of equipment like life jackets and the engine for the rubber dinghy that militants came ashore in Mumbai.

Rehman said Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah, two members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, were still in custody. He said two other men being held were Khan and Riaz, withholding their full names so as not to compromise the investigation. One of those arrested, identified as Javed Iqbal, was lured back to Pakistan from the Spanish city of Barcelona, Malik said.

Investigators had also discovered some funds transferred from Italy and Spain were used to finance the attack, and Austrian telephone sim cards were used. Malik spoke too of a link, possibly an Internet domain, to Houston in the United States.Malik said investigators had been unable to confirm the identities of the nine gunmen killed in the attack, though Pakistan has confirmed Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the gunman caught alive, was a Pakistani.

Finally Pakistan admits that Kasab is a pakistani and the the plot was hatched in pakistan. Even after admitting all these they have just filed a FIR against these conspirators and said in order to prosecute these terrorist they need further evidence fron India. Trying to put ball back in India'a court they have put some 30 questions along with the report which they insist that India must answer for the investigation to continue.Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said the Pakistani report would be studied before any reaction was given.

Two satellites collide in orbit

NASA says two communication satellite collided in the first-ever crash of two intact spacecraft in orbit. The collision occurred tuesday nearly 500 miles over Siberia. The crash produced a pair of massive debris clouds, according to NASA. But officials say any risk to the international space station. which orbits below the collision course is low. NASA also said that it will takes weeks to determine the magnitude of this crash.

The two satellites were an Iridium commercial satellite launched in 1997, and a Russian satellite launched in 1993, which was believed to be non functioning. According to Mark Matney, an orbital debris scientist at Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX, the Russian satellite was out of control. Matney and his team monitor the 9,831 pieces of man made debris currently in orbit around the Earth, each at least four inches in diameter.

The Iridium craft weighed 1,235 pounds, and the Russian craft was nearly 2,000 pounds. So far, Matney's team is counting dozens of pieces, though he suspects by the time everything is accounted for it will be in the hundreds. And if pieces smaller than four inches were included the count would likely be in the thousands.

Microsoft receives 10,000th patent

Microsoft today announced that they have received their 10,000th patent, number 7,479,950 entitled "manipulation association of data with a physical object " which sounds ironic enough.!

While the patent's abstract reads:
"Data elements stored in a computing system and associated with a physical object are re associated with the same or another physical object. An identifying characteristic presented by the physical object, such as a reflective pattern applied to the object, is detected when the object is positioned adjacent to the interactive display surface. Images or other files associated with the identifying characteristic are accessed and displayed on the interactive display surface. A gesture by a user adjacent to the interactive display surface is detected to re associate a selected representation. For example, the user can change where the selected element fits in a sequence of data elements, or reassociate the selected element with a second object placed on the interactive display surface. In a networked environment, the re associated element can be stored on a server and subsequently accessed from a different interactive surface via the network using the second physical object."

For the second year in a row, in 2008 the IEEE ranked Microsoft's patent portfolio at the top of the list in terms of "its power and influence," and not just among software companies. In 2003, Microsoft made a public commitment to broaden its IP licensing efforts, shifting "from a defensive posture to a proactive, collaborative one."

jayawardena steps down as captain

Mahela Jayawardene is stepping down as captain after their tour of Pakistan, the 31-year-old announced today. Jayawardene, Sri Lanka's most successful Test captain, met with national selectors earlier in the day and informed them of his decision to stand down after three years at the helm.

Sri Lanka will play 2 test matches in Pakistan beginning 21st Feb. In the press conference he said "This is is something I have been considering for some time as it has been my long-held belief that my successor should have at least 18 months in the job to imprint his vision on the team for the 2011 World Cup.....after much thought, I have concluded that the right time has now come for fresh leadership to takeover."

The recent ODI series defeat against India (4-1) at home and also his poor run with the bat must have enforced this decision upon him.Kumara Sangakara will be the front runner for the captaincy as he is the vice-captain of the Lankan team. He also said that he will completely support his new successor and hope to play a major role in the team as a batsman for years to come.

Intel's 8-core CPU's...

Thats right Intel will be rolling out its news 8-core processors called Nehalem processors very soon. These processors will be available with up to eight cores and multi-threading technology to enable them to run up to 16 threads in parallel. This week at ISSCC 2009, Intel will be providing more detailed information about the Nehalem processor lineup. According to the conference program, 45 nm Nehalem processors are on the way for mobile, desktop and server applications.
Besides the fact that these processors will have up to eight cores, it is interesting to note that despite the core count Intel will be able to maintain the power envelope of its current Core 2 processors. Intel will discuss in more detail a 45 nm 8-core “Enterprise” Xeon processor, which carries 2.3 billion transistors during the ISSCC meet. The company said that it uses core cache shut-off techniques to minimize leakage, but a power consumption of 130 watts in such a scenario is certainly impressive nevertheless.

32 nm shrinks of Nehalem processors are expected to debut in Q4 of this year. It may be interesting to note that 2.3 billion transistor 8-core CPUs have 80,000 times more transistors than the Intel's original 16-bit 8086 CPU first released on 10,000 nm processes just 31 years ago, and one million times more transistors than Intel's original 4-bit 4004 CPU in 1971.

The one and only "AXXO"

To Hollywood executives, he's public enemy number one. To film fans around the world(like us), he's a modern-day Robin Hood. As the internet's most prolific pirate makes his 1,000th illegal film download available to the masses, the mysterious figure known only as aXXo
At 8.40am on Monday 15 December, a new post appeared on an internet forum called the Darkside Release Group. "Darkside_RG" is a clearing house for internet pirates, a site dedicated to the online redistribution of movies, music and video games The post in question contained a BitTorrent file – the most widespread and efficient file sharing method on the web – containing an illicit copy of a horror film called Mirrors. Though the mainstream media ignored it, this was a landmark moment for millions of file sharers worldwide: the 1,000th movie uploaded by aXXo, the internet's most popular and enduring pirate..

This aXXo may be anonymous, but he (or she, or they) is a global brand. His most popular uploads are downloaded illegally by up to a million internet users per week. His files regularly make up more than one-third of all the films trafficked on BitTorrent. Here is the link for the aXXo movies..

google phone on its way

Less than a year after i Phone madness gripped Singapore, Google's own handset is set to shake up the mobile phone market.
The much touted Google phone, also known as the HTC Dream, will be sold here by SingTel exclusively. Singapore will be the first in Asia to get the phone. The telecom company currently holds exclusive local rights to Apple's i Phone 3G, which debuted here last August.

Unlike the i Phone, Google's phone runs on an open-source operating system known as Android. This means manufacturers do not have to pay Google for using the software, resulting in cheaper handsets for consumers. Also, developers can build applications, like games, more easily.

Though the HTC Dream cellphone sold out quickly when it was pre-launched in the United States last year, it still garnered much criticism for not offering a video-recording function and only having a few applications available. SingTel had no further details of when the HTC Dream would start selling here, nor how much it would cost.
